Act One Writing Assignment
Task: Create a blog about your ideas and reflections on the act or a blog from the point of view of one of the characters.
I found this act to be pretty amusing due to the perverseness of the nurse and other characters, and the "slang" words that mean nothing bad in Shakespearean language, but something else in today's modern times. An example of this would be "What noise is this? Give me my long sword, ho!" spoken by Capulet. Enough said about that one. An example from the nurse would be "No less, nay bigger. Women grow by men." There are many other quotes that are perverse as well.
With the Nurse's comical ways, she was one of my favorite characters in this act. Sometimes though, the 'sexual' jokes are a little too out of my league, and I can't understand the joke at all. I'm pretty curious to know what some of the jokes are. Though I did not see the whole entire Romeo and Juliet movie starring Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting, the nurse in the movie did not match the nurse I invisioned in my head while reading the book. In my head, the nurse looked like a joyful...witch. Much more aged and ragged then the actress in the movie.
I've liked the book so far, and nothing so far has conflicted with what I've imagined other than what the characters look like. The descriptions of characters were masterly intertwined within the speech of the characters, and you got a real good sense of what each character's personality was like judging from what they said, what other people said, and the actions involved with them. A great example of this would be how Romeo speaks about his love. His speeches about love, or someone he loves are always so poetic and flowing that you can feel how mad he is about love.
Shakespeare's descriptive writing is phenomenal, especially the part about Queen Mab. You can truly imagine, and depict what Queen Mab looks like, and how majestic the little creature is. Delicacy was sewn throughout the paragraph on Queen Mab flawlessly, until Mercutio becomes momentarily insane of course.
Another great thing about this act was that many of the reactions aren't exaggerated, and were actually possible. For example, when Tybalt saw Romeo at the ball and told Capulet, the Capulet reacted in a way anyone would react when they're having so much fun. Everything was possible and not as exaggerated as other stories I've read before.
This first act was truly an enjoyable one, and the rest of the book still awaits.
